The College of Fisheries of Mindanao State University Marawi city have conducted a study on Lake Lanao in Lanao del Sur on October 2006. They've discovered that Lake Lanao is facing a "massive algae contamination". Initially, poor sewage and agricultural waste management were seen as the culprit to the contamination. However, the Department of of Agriculture and Fisheries and Aquatic Resources that soil erosion from indiscriminate logging and extensive land use and farming are the problems that caused the algae contamination.
